The client’s ambition of developing a sustainable settlement is laid out with the simple intention of having green streets, providing a connection to the local amenities, providing drainage and community space where the pace of movement encourages the interaction of neighbours, promoting collective living. Vehicle routes are kept perpendicular to these streets, only weaving across them at a few points. Parking is kept within the blocks.
A district heating system cuts inefficiencies of transporting energy, while roofs are pitched to optimise solar power generation, which will also operate as a shared network, optimising efficiency. Large glazed buffer zones are positioned to the south-west moderating internal temperatures and promoting indoor-outdoor living. Each typical house unit is highly insulated and airtight with minimised surface area.
