Isle of Wight Studio School
Isle of Wight Studio School is part of the Southampton City College academy and was developed out of the remodeling and extension of an Edwardian primary school. The school is supported by local partners and focuses on a marine engineering study track. The progressive and business like ethos of studio schools demanded a significant change in character to the existing building. Warren like additions to the old building were removed and a distinctive new core inserted, defining a loop of informal spaces connecting to more traditional teaching spaces and reducing corridors to a minimum. The core places the staff right at the heart of the school and provides natural light and ventilation within the deep plan. Bold colours are used to transform the spaces, and furniture has been carefully placed around the building creating flexible use in the communal areas. The second phase, a new block, housing specialist marine engineering rooms defines a new entrance, reorienting the old building and securing outdoor teaching areas in one move. Its form references the existing buildings, while its contrasting gable acts as clear signage announcing the identity of the new school.
